 California Poppy

In California in the spring, if you spot bright orange flowers along the highway or a huge area of color on a south facing slope, its likely the California Poppy. Poppies are the state flower. Needing the right conditions, they don't always put on a great show each year. Surprisingly, fire is a key element in producing a spectacular bloom. California Poppy seeds will lay dormant for years under a hillside slope that is covered with Manzanita or other native brush. But in early spring following a wildfire, if given enough moisture from winter storms they will be one of the first plants to explode forth, providing a dazzling flower display. This was the case in San Diego County this year after the devastating wildfires of 2007.
