Northern Elephant Seal With Cookiecutter Shark Bite

Northern Elephant seal with fresh Cookiecutter Shark bite. Little is known about how Cookiecutter Sharks prey on marine mammals. They are small sharks, less than two feet in length and normally live in deep water. Specimens are often caught or snagged in nets at well over two thousand feet. Elephant Seals are deep divers, its believed that while they are hunting at depth the opportunistic Cookiecutter makes a single bite in the side of an unwary seal. They then flip their body to excise a round symmetrical plug of flesh, two to about four inches in diameter.
