 Striped Marlin Underwater

A Striped Marlin hammers a small Sardine baitball.

Having the chance to observe and photograph these pelagic gamefish free-swimming and feeding off the west coast of Baja Mexico was an amazing experience. It was interesting how what appeared to be a feeding frenzy from the surface, actually proved to be quite controlled underwater. Groups of Marlin would circle from beneath or follow from a distance keeping the bait at the surface. For the most part actual feeding was limited to one or two fish at a time breaking from the group and rocketing through the bait while whipping their swords from side to side. We saw all types of catches from individual bait impaled on sword tips, to others being sliced in half or just apparently stunned allowing the attacking Marlin to make a leisurely turn back and pick them off like kernels of popcorn.
