 California Elkhorn Kelp

Elkhorn Kelp is an often overlooked algae species of the California Kelp Forest environment. Its low growing and normally found along the interface between where the rocky reef structure of the Kelp Forest gives way to the deeper sand plain. Its fronds or blades often lie along the bottom and can be sixty feet or more in length. Elkhorn Kelp provides critical cover and habitat for fish such as this school of Blacksmith as well as numerous other fish and invertebrate species. It is also exceedingly frustrating to photograph as its always kind of down there in the muck, laying around at difficult angles to the light from the surface.
