Lions at La Jolla Shores Oh My

Ok its not the furry kind but still quite interesting. After reading numerous reports from the DiveBums Forum, I figured it was time to check this out for myself. Directly off La Jolla Shores a few patches of Macrocystis Kelp have taken hold along the canyon slope. This in itself is interesting in that the Shores is historically a sandy bottom devoid of any algae growth for the most part.

The particular patch drawing all the interest is in fifty feet of water. When first approaching you immediately see that something is odd about a few specific kelp stalks. They appear to be adorned from bottom to top with white ornaments. Upon closer inspection they prove to be masses of Lions Nudibranchs (Melibe leonina), covering the plants to over twenty five feet off the bottom. Each individual has a large umbrella like appendage on its head called an oral hood, which is used to filter feed in the water column. This was by far the largest aggregation of a single species of Nudibranch I had ever seen.
