Harbor Seal Lounging in Drift Kelp

Harbor Seal Lounging in Drift Kelp

Decided to get one last offshore run in before the end of 2009. The surface conditions proved to be stellar. A classic late season southern California day. Dead calm all day with just a bit of chill in the air and a glass surface you could run for miles on without a bump. You could clearly see San Clemente Island from a distance of over fifty miles.

There had been numerous reports of sport boats returning with large numbers of Humboldt Squid. We did find many Sea Lions feeding on individual squid they had caught at depth and we metered some very large masses at depths of about 100 feet. This Harbor Seal was lounging in a patch of drift kelp likely after plugging himself on squid.
