Nose to Fluke Blue Whale Underwater

This nose to tail Blue Whale shot took a real investment in both time and effort to accomplish. Few wildlife subjects require so many variables all having to come together to produce a real opportunity. Calm surface conditions, clear bright sky, solid underwater visibility, large quantities of krill and of course a whale feeding at the surface that decides its time for her close-up.

Ive been running offshore now for many years with others that share this odd addiction of wanting to see a sixty foot long giant gracefully swim right past them underwater. Richard Herrmann, Jerry Allen, Howard Hall, Bob Cranston, Doug Perrine and Lance Milbrand have all spent untold days offshore on my boat the Petrel. Its always an enjoyable day on the ocean with great conversation, but few days prove to provide even a brief glimpse of a Blue Whale underwater and fewer still align with conditions that produce a real photo op.

This shot was taken about a month ago, during a surprise late season arrival of krill and whales south of San Diego in Mexican waters. Normally if Blue Whales are going to be seen off southern California it will be from June through around the end of August. This year they showed in big numbers, the first week of October. For a short few days all the variables clicked into place, surface conditions, blue water, krill and whales. I will be posting a couple more shots in future blog entries.

A big thank you to Howard Hall and Peter Kragh for providing the initial intel.
