Willow Beach Rainbow Trout Fish Hatchery

I recently spent a couple hours at the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery. Located on the Arizona side of the Colorado River about eleven miles south of Hoover Dam, the hatchery primarily raises Rainbow Trout for stocking Lake Mead and Lake Mojave to the south. In rows of long concrete tanks thousands of fry are raised to a releasable size of about twelve inches within six months. In addition to Rainbows, the native Razorback Sucker is also raised at the hatchery. The goal is to attempt to support the native population which is a threatened species along the southern Colorado River. Willow Beach is part of a national system of fish hatcheries operated by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

In this photo young rainbow trout are being transferred to a water filled bucket to be weighed prior to being released into an adjoining tank to continue the grow-out process.
